You should check out what Dr. John Christy has to say about global warming. His name may not be well-known, but he's one of the principal authors of the IPCC report, a very well-respected climatologist.

He is publicly distancing himself from the hype and expressing major doubts about this whole thing. Some of his colleagues actually have sued or threatened to sue to get their names off the IPCC report!

I know this isn't getting a whole lot of publicity, but that's the nature of this game I guess, and besides - a coming catastrophe makes for much sexier reporting.

Do a Google news search and see for yourself.

And you are absolutely correct - it's a new religion.

In most religions they tell you that if you don't change your ways you are going to Hell. In this religion, by contrast, if we all don't change our ways, we are ALL going to Hell!

And they call us "Deniers", as in "Holocaust Deniers" and folks like that. Some environmentalists have even called publicly for trials and hangings for Deniers!!!

Scary stuff, huh?

There was an article in the Globe a while ago where Roger Berkowitz, the head of Legal Seafoods, talked about the problem of portions at restaurants. He had some interesting things to say. This is from the same article, I think:

At the CIA's annual Healthy Flavors conference, Drescher brings together restaurant operators, top chefs, and academics such as professors Walter Willett and Eric Rimm of the Harvard School of Public Health. "We all have to rethink the value proposition together -- figuring out how to reduce protein portions while adding more flavor and interest to the plate," Drescher says. "The issue of portion size is the most difficult issue facing the restaurant industry today -- much more difficult to address than getting trans fats out of the food chain, or adding in more whole grains. The answer isn't simply a matter of reducing the size of the steak, or serving a smaller slice of cheesecake. We've got to get more creative about ways to add value and flavor without making Americans fatter."
"Healthy eating is a conundrum for an American restaurant," agrees Legal Sea Foods CEO Roger Berkowitz. "For the American diner, size connotes value. If I were to cut back on the amount of protein on the plate, people would think I was cutting back on costs." What Berkowitz does when dieting diners complain about portions being too large is to suggest that they take half the entrée home, or order the lunch-size serving. "And of course, there are the people who complain that the portions are too small. You can't win," Berkowitz adds. " 'Diet' and 'healthy' are not good words in the restaurant industry. People go out to eat to reward themselves, and 'healthy' doesn't imply 'tasty.' ""

Such a valuation could easily be a catastrophe waiting to happen - a modern day Titanic about to hit an iceberg. George Santayana said, "Catastrophes come when some dominant institution, swollen like a soap-bubble and still standing without foundations, suddenly crumbles at the touch of what may seem a word or an idea, but is really some stronger material force". My question is, "What foundations do they have for guaranteed future success?" Ties in with your question: "How do you model potential?"
